WOW… I cannot say enough how in love I was with Ripple Effect. It was BEYOND AMAZING! I discovered this book last week when I was listing the new releases for my latest book news post. The blurb was calling my name SO hard that I couldn’t ignore it. It is a complete standalone book that will keep you reading in one sitting. Trust me! This is one of the best books if you are a fan of dark contemporary romance. The suspense is awesome as well, so it is perfect for romantic suspense fans.

The story follows a seventeen-year-old (almost eighteen) girl named Dylan who has been forced to live in fosters homes since she was eleven years old. Her father was murdered and her mother died from a drug overdose. Having been alone since she was a little girl has forced her to trust no one and learned to survive. After her mother died she had to live with her mother’s sister and her drug dealer uncle where rape and abuse have become her new life. The only hope she has is to count down the days until she is eighteen and gets out of the house. However, a few weeks before her eighteen birthday, something happens which then forces her to run.

For months, I’ve watched him.
I’ve fantasized him as my savior, my lover. My ticket out of the hell I’ve lived in for the last six years.
I never dreamed he’d be my nightmare.
Had I known what he really is, I’d have never gotten in the car that night, but life is full of cause and effect.
And sometimes the choice on offer isn’t a choice at all.
It’s the result of something already in motion, and we’re merely left to survive the ripple effect.

Ripley is known as the cruelest assassin for hire who always does his job perfectly. He is reliable and loyal to those who hire his specialty. He is known as the best and feared by everyone, including those who hire him. He has no heart, no conscience, no empathy. Nothing. Just a monster designed to kill. Some circumstances bring them both together and as much as she starts to become his unwanted distraction who will be his weakness if let in. In his world, showing even a little sign of weakness means death.

They call me RIP.
I’m a killer. A murderer. A psychopath.
In the eyes of the righteous, I’m a monster, born of sin and depravity.
I want to protect her, but I’m not a good man.
I want to love her, but I no longer feel.
She gets under my skin, though, and has awakened something inside of me.
Something I’d kill for.
I’m not her savior—not even close. In fact, I’m worse than the hell she’s already suffered.
I’m her vengeance. Tit for tat, as they say.
And if she’s not careful, I’ll be her ruin.

My thoughts:

As I said above, this book is one of the best dark contemporary romance I’ve ever read. It has everything I love and even beyond.

I loved the main characters. The hero is strong, sexy, and mysterious. His dangerous and mysterious sides will terrify every soul. The scenes were at times uncomfortable to read because of how real they were portrayed. My big applause to the author. My inner junkie was in a test most of the time! However, when it comes to the woman he cares for, he is a great lover. I know many readers would not agree with me on this considering his nature and what he does but it will never change the fact that I was swooned and fell head over heels in love with him! He is, hands down, one of my favorite anti-heroes. Besides, the heroine is a kickass one. She is fearless but smart and despite how she was growing up, she has never lost her heart. One thing I loved most about her was that she is an animal lover.

The romance was OFF the charts. Surprisingly, it was deeper than I expected it to be. I knew it would be kind of sexy and erotic but didn’t prepare for it to be very emotional. Their relationship was far from normal but the one that I could understand. It was a perfectly written that had you feel all the emotions of their dialogs and rooted for them. Considering the twisted, impossible situation they were in, I was constantly questioning how the ending would be for both of them and couldn’t happier with how everything was wrapped up.

She’s my perfection. My reason. My obsession. My beautiful butterfly.

I loved that the animal loving subject was one of the focus. It was one of the reasons the heroine was willing to risk her life and it was brought many times throughout the story. It did hit my soul since I am a huge animal lover. I loved the message behind it and couldn’t be happier with the ending.

The twists and turns were AWESOME. For me, it is usually a huge risk putting so many secrets and revelations in one story. However, everything worked well in this story. Every single scene and dialog were connected and had their own purposes leading to the main drama revealed at the end. They kept me sitting on the edge of my seat, with my heart beating hard all night long. You couldn’t help but be a part of the world. I was on constant alert as though the dangers would soon happen before my eyes when I didn’t expect them. It kept my anticipation high and never failed to surprise me.

The supporting characters were creepy but incredible. There were no good or bad people. Everything was a blur which made me constantly question everyone. It added the element of mystery which was refreshing and addicting.

Overall, Ripple Effect is an action packed, unputdownable, addicting story that will keep you on your toes. I highly recommend this to those interested in dark, contemporary romance. However, the violence, taboo, and abuse subjects might not work for everyone; hence, it is not for everyone. For those who are a fan, this should be your next read. Trust me; this is a must read!

He may not be a hero in the traditional sense, but in my world, where violence is life and suffering is survival, Ripley is a brutal contender against the iniquity I’ve come to know. And that makes him a good man in my eyes.

  1. Wow, that looks scary good! The cover is pretty hot, but your review is what sold me. I’m nervous because deeply angsty books are hard for me, but I think I really want to try this one! Winning review, Geybie!

  3. I’ve heard this author’s name before, but I’ve never read any of her works… big mistake! Sounds like something full of grief and drama, I’ll definitely have to check her out! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Geybie!

  4. Ok, you totally convinced me I need this book. I just finished the Scarlet Scars series by JM Darhower and have been looking for more books like that (Dark but deeper than expected!) and this sounds amazing!
