WOW, what an emotional roller coaster I have been in and I loved every second of it! When I read the blurb of the first book (The Darkest Sunrise) I knew right away I wanted to devour this story. I hate cliffhangers so I waited for the second book (The Brightest Sunset) to be released before jumping in. This is a duet, consisted of two books that have to be read in order since it follows the same couple. If you haven’t read this series, please grab it as soon as possible. Trust me, it will take you to an awesome emotional adventure you will never forget.

What is the story about?

This is the kind of story that you need to go in blindly. I don’t want to ruin your experience by giving away too much information about it. With that in mind, I will try as careful as possible telling you the story without ending up giving any spoiler. It follows a man and a woman whose lives were shattered by tragedies in the past. He is a single dad who is trying to be the best parent for his two kids.

My smile had become a mask for the kids. My laugh a guise to throw my family off the beaten path. Going through the motions of carrying on—all the while, I was withering away.

She is a single woman whose life is dedicated to her job as a doctor.

I stayed busy, kept to myself, and made a difference in other people’s lives as some sort of penance for having failed the one person who had truly depended on me.

They both have one thing in common: they are struggling to live normally. Two broken people try to find comfort and peace in each other’s company.

Just a little company in the darkness. No questions. No judgments. No faking it.

My thoughts:

The storyline was flawless–deep and emotional. There weren’t any dull moments from the very beginning to the end; every single thing happened for a reason, was connected to one another, and led to the climax the author wanted us to discover at the end. I found the whole story carefully maintained and flawlessly written. Even though I kind of knew what was coming, the twists and turns did manage to turn me into an emotional wreck. My heart was hurting and broken with them. It brought out all the emotions in me and made me experience each one of them in a deeper level through the secrets, revelations, and beautiful moments.

Aly Martinez managed to mix the emotional elements and the humor and lightness in the dialogs in a way that made you live the story instead of reading it. The emotional elements will suck you in and make you experience it with the main characters and the hilarious banter will make you forget the devastating reality they were in. The author flawlessly made me experience these two things exchangeable throughout the story. I was a cry baby one minute who was laughing my gut out in the next minutes. It felt surreal to be able to experience these extreme emotions in a short chapter but that what you will get if you give this story a try. As I said above, prepare for a wonderful adventure!

The connection between the main characters was priceless. Despite it being an instant and intense one, it was far from easy, smooth, or perfect. They did WORK FOR IT and the obstacles they had to face did test their relationship to the end of its limit. As a romance reader for years, there were very little moments in which I doubted whether the main couples could make it at the end and this story was one of them. I was worried about it for a while and did wonder, “how could the author pull it off at the end? Is it going to be a happy ending?” Wow, Aly Martinez blew my mind since the ending could not be more beautiful.

“It’s always darkest before dawn, Porter. We just have to wait a little while longer. The sun always rises, baby.”

The supporting characters were awesome as well and you couldn’t help but fell in love with them. They made the story rich and memorable. I loved that the author made each one of them as real as possible that we can relate. There was no any one-dimensional character which I very appreciated. We could see the reasons why they were behaving that way or choosing to do what they did. The reasoning behind their actions made their growth so fascinating to watch. I hoped some of them could get their own stories told, especially Tanner!

All in all, The Darkest Sunrise Duet is an unforgettable story you will not want to miss. I highly recommend it to those who love a deep, emotional love story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it. I cannot say enough in words how amazing this story is other than “this is the story you will regret you don’t give a try sooner.” It was my first by Aly Martinez but it has made me her biggest fan.

“I’ve been falling in love with you since the first day I met you. And, sweetheart, you have to know that, with a woman like you, it’s a really short trip.”
