Weekly Recap – NetGalley and Books I Received & Bought (May 14, 2017)

Posted May 14, 2017 by Geybie's Book Blog in Weekly Recaps / 96 Comments

Hi everyone, how are you? I hope you are doing great and having a wonderful weekend. Last week was a good week for me. I made an account on NetGalley and got a book I requested. Thank you to all fellow book bloggers that have given me awesome advice about the site and how to use it. I’ve been extra careful when it comes to requesting books and only requested two books so far.

I’m used to buying books based on recommendations from my trusted book bloggers and prefer that way. I do enjoy NetGalley but requesting books that weren’t recommended by book bloggers actually terrifies me. I’m afraid I’ll end up reading and reviewing the books I don’t like and getting burned out at the end because of it.

I’m having a short trip to my hometown to visit my parents and sisters next week and so excited about it. As you know, my little sister is getting married in a few months so I’m going to help her with some stuff. I hope I still can read and blog as much during the trip though but I know it’s going to be hard.

Last week on the blog:

Corrupt by [Douglas, Penelope] The Gravity of Us by [Cherry, Brittainy]

These are my new book-related discussions, just in case you haven’t read them yet.

Books I just received and purchased:

I got Claim and Protect by Rhenna Morgan from NetGalley and Ruckus by L.J. Shen by the publisher. I just purchased Crow (Boston Underworld #1) and Reaper (Boston Underworld #2) by A. Zavarelli, Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and Misconduct by Penelope Douglas (I’ve just purchased) based on the recommendations of my book blogging friends.

Claim & Protect (The Haven Brotherhood) by [Morgan, Rhenna] Ruckus (Sinners of Saint, #2) CROW (Boston Underworld Book 1) by [Zavarelli, A.] REAPER (Boston Underworld Book 2) by [Zavarelli, A.] Redeeming Love: A Novel by [Rivers, Francine] Misconduct by [Douglas, Penelope]

Books I’m planning to read this month:

I’m going to finish The Others series by Anne Bishop. I still have three books left and am planning to read all of them before the end of this month.

Vision In Silver: A Novel of the Others by [Bishop, Anne] Marked In Flesh (A Novel of the Others Book 4) by [Bishop, Anne] Etched in Bone (A Novel of the Others) by [Bishop, Anne]

I’m planning to buy some books that have been on my radar such as The Clover Chapel by Devney Perry and Plus One by Aleatha Romig.

The Clover Chapel (Jamison Valley Series Book 2) by [Perry, Devney] Plus One by [Romig, Aleatha]

And I can’t wait to read Until It Fades by K.A. Tucker. I already pre-ordered the book and can’t wait to read it next month. I hope it will be live sooner though.

Until It Fades: A Novel by [Tucker, K.A.]

Book I’m currently reading:

I’m currently reading Crow (Boston Underworld #1) by A. Zavarelli. I love the writing and am enjoying the story so far.
CROW (Boston Underworld Book 1) by [Zavarelli, A.]

That is all from me. What are your all-time and latest favorites? 😀

  1. I love Reaper and the book 3 Ghost even more. The Others by Anne Bishop was awesome. I bought books by LJ Shen (Sparrow and Blood to Dust). But I haven’t tried them yet.
I’m also wanting to try Until it Fades. But I don’t see an audiobook to preorder.
    Have a great weekend.

    • You make me want to read this entire series even more. I’ve just purchased the first two books. Yep, I can’t wait for Until It Fades. The reviews have been awesome so far. 😀
      Have a wonderful week.

Welcome to NetGalleyland! 😊 It’s true that there is a chance you won’t like thr ARCs you request bit I know you’ll have fun 😋 I just realized I have Crow! It has tons of good reviews so I think I’ll read it next! Then we can fangirl about his hot irish accent 😜

  3. Yeah, I became a lot more picky about the books I request after drowning for awhile. 😀 And it’s fun to take a chance sometimes. Woohoo! Finishing The Others binge. Hope you love them. Have a great week and trip home!

Congrats on Netgalley! And I love book blogger recommendations- seriously some of my best reads have been recs! Some of them I never would have even known about!

Hope your new reads are good ones! 🙂

  5. Congrats on getting your request approved. Netgalley can be lethal I found but I had seen so many people warn against it I felt prepared so hopefully you will too. I have a rule. One book reviewed, one book requested. It helps me. Have a good week.

    • Thanks for the tips, Emma. I have two ARCs from netgalley and already am feeling overwhelmed. I just remembered, I haven’t reviewed some books for blog tours yet. I do need to apply your rule. 😩
      Thank you. 😁

  6. I use NetGalley mostly to request books by my favorite authors. You know, those who are auto-buy and pre-orders – most of the time, I totally love those, and so it’s nice to get the books in advance. Congrats on getting your first book from them 🙂 It’s quite exciting, don’t you think?
Recs are really good, though, and you’ll be able to read my review for Until it Fades soon 😉
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

  7. I always enjoy A. Zavarelli books, I haven’t finished any of the series yet, hopefully one day.

Congrats on getting the book you wanted from NetGalley. I don’t do arc’s, I did one recently because I won a giveaway on Goodreads and I didn’t like the anxiety that came along with it, plus I didn’t care for the book.

Enjoy your visit with family, safe travels and have a wonderful week.

    • Thank you, Jovita. I’m loving Crow so far. I love the writing. Hopefully I can finish it tomorrow. The reviews for the series are awesome on goodreads. 😁
Anyway, have a wonderful week, too. 😁

  8. Congratulations on joining Netgalley. The trick is to make a firm limit – as I regularly read 3 books a week, I won’t request more than 4 books a month from Netgalley and then I have a schedule on my desktop listing all review copies and when they are due to be published so nothing slips through the net. As a result I have a feedback rate of 86% at present. Another tip – I ONLY browse when I need to add more books to my list for the coming months because it is very easy to get carried away. Best of luck! My Sunday Post – https://sjhigbee.wordpress.com/2017/05/14/sunday-post-14th-may-2017/

    • I’m used to reading off schedule, based on my mood. I think I need a schedule now with ARCs from netgalley and blog tours. It’s been hard to remember the dates I should publish the reviews. I’m trying to just go there once a week mostly to update my profile (blog statistics). It’s so easy to lose control. Hehe 😁
Thank you for the tips. 👍

  9. Congrats on getting books from NetGalley. In the beginning, I went a little crazy requesting and had so many that I literally felt stressed out. Now I try to request no more than a handful, and with release dates scattered carefully …and only books I am pretty sure to love.

Enjoy! Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  10. Have a safe trip home! I have had Crow by A. Zaverelli on my kindle forever so I am excited to get your thoughts. I have also had Misconduct sitting there for awhile too!
I’m so impressed by your control on NetGalley. I have none. Zero. I must click all the books!!!
    Have a great week!

    • It’s definitely not easy, Sam. As you know, I’m a book hoarder. 😜
We need to buddy read Misconduct. I’m so excited to start it. Maybe this week. I need to finish two ARCs first.
      Thank you. 😁

I love NetGalley. I have way too many books to read from the site but I have really found some gems over the years. Just make sure you don’t go crazy requesting and you will be just fine. Have fun with your trip to see family and have a great week!

  12. That’s great you got accepted for some reads on Netgalley. I didn’t use it for awhile, but that’s mostly because I didn’t have an e-reader. I feel like I request more in the past year or so, but yeah, I try and mostly go with the ones I’m SURE I’ll like. 🙂

I hope you have fun visiting with your family!

  13. Good job with your NetGalley discretion. We can never really tell about a book until we read it but since we are picking them based on author and/or blurb there is usually a good chance that we will like them. You have a good handful of books to enjoy. Happy Reading!

  14. All the best for NetGalley – stick to authors you like as much as possible, I hate it when I end up with a book I don’t really enjoy reading, it does make the reading bug wane! Exciting to have a wedding in the family coming up.

  15. Pussreboots

A few years ago I had a NetGalley account but I gave it up. Read enough of their books and you’ll see a high number of poor quality ebooks — even ones from big publishing houses. Also, as you’ve already guessed, it is easy to get get in a rut of feeling obligated to review everything, even books you don’t like.

I had a great week of reading and a fun mother’s day. Come see what I’m reading now.

    • Oh so sorry to hear that. Yes, I’ve heard many reviewers have experienced it. They ended up getting burned out. I’m currently reading a book from netgalley by an author I’m not familiar with but I’m loving it so far. I think I’m so lucky. 😁

  16. Enjoy your trip back to your home town. The upcoming wedding sounds exciting too! I hope you still manage to squeeze in some reading/blogging time!

I wish you all the best with Netgalley, you have a set plan which is great. I have signed up and received just one book. It doesn’t really work for me too well as I prefer print over ebooks any day!

Enjoy your books haul this week, its an impressive one!

    • I’m reading one of the ARCs from netgalley and loving it so far. So I think it is really not as bad as I thought it would be. Hehe 😁
Thank you for stopping by, Aislynn. Have a wonderful week. 😁

  17. A lot of your new haul is by authors who are new to me. However PLus One is by an author who also writes romantic suspense so you have me curious. I hope you love reading the rest of the Others!

    • Thank you, Kim. Many of them are from new to me authors, too.
Aleatha Romig is one of my favorite dark romance authors. I love her writing, so I think Plus One would be awesome, too. 😁

  18. I’m a big fan of Robyn Carr – especially the Virgin River series. I also love Kristan Higgins’ books and Jill Shalvis’s. Have a great week!

    • I’ve had one of Shalvis’s book. It’s been on my TBR for a while. I need to read it as soon as possible. Hopefully next month. Thanks for recommending me these authors. I’m gonna check out Carr’s The Virgin River series and Higgins’ books. 👍🏻😁

  19. I love getting eGalleys. I read 5-6 books a week. I could never afford my reading habit without Galleys, and even before I was asked to join the blog, I wrote reviews on GoodReads. So win-win for me.

  20. I am glad that you are going slow with Netgalley. I have made the mistake of blinding requesting time and time again. Sometimes I get some good ones, but lots of times I end up reading mediocre books. I swear I am going to get my account to 80% this year. I loved the Others, hope you love it just as much.

    • Thank you, Heidi. I started reading the ARC from netgalley yesterday and can’t put it down. I’m loving it so far. Wow, I’m so lucky. I wasn’t sure at first since the author was new to me. But, wow. I’ve been blown away! 😁

  21. Congrats on getting on Netgalley. I totally understand what you mean about getting burnt out from books that aren’t great, which is why I’m pretty picky when it comes to what I’ll request on there. Hope you enjoy your books!

    • Yay, I can’t wait to read them both, Angie. Misconduct was recommended to me and I LOVED the blurb. It is my second book by this author. I hope it will be better than Corrupt. Yay, so excited for Until It Fades! 😁👍🏻

  22. Enjoy the rest of the Boston Underworld series! I love series that keep you reaching for the next installment. Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!

  23. YAAAYYYY for NetGalley! I’d like to think that some of my advice helped??? I hope so! Well done on getting your first approval! That’s so exciting. 🙂

Also – I totally agree with getting books that haven’t been strongly recommended to you, but you will often find that other book bloggers you enjoy will have also been reading books from NG so you are able to still pick up SOME that are already recommended. Also there’s something a little fun about going in blind sometimes! I love BuzzBooks – they help a LOT and are always ‘Read Now’s on NG.

Hope you have had a lovely trip and best of luck for you and your little sister!!!

    • Thank you so much, Di. Yes, it does help. It’s so exciting. I’m trying to limit my request but yeah it’s not easy. So many great looking books there. 😩😁👍🏻
I’ve just finished reading my first ARC from Netgalley. I loved it so much, even though it was by a new author to me. 😁
